To enhance the functionalities by using custom CSS and making modifications to core files, we suggest using a child theme. You can easily install the child theme by accessing Theme Options, then Systems, and selecting Install & Activate Child Theme.
Once you have activated the child theme, you may begin adding your custom CSS to the style.css file or your custom PHP code to the functions.php file via Appearance > Editor.
